THE BROKEN NECKLACE
This is a hand-drawn animation exploring a funny story about a young man’s struggle to buy a new necklace for his girlfriend. The world of the animation is designed as a tropical island where the landscape is reminiscent of Hawaii. The idea behind the work is to reflect upon certain consuming behaviours, and to inspire discussion about the social nature of consuming products.
From an aesthetic perspective, a Japanese comic style has been adopted as the main visual approach because it has profoundly influenced the animator. For example, the short animation called Fumiko’s Confession (2009) by Hiroyasu Ishida has inspired this work in terms of creating exaggerated actions and facial expressions. From the theoretical perspective, the work is particularly connected to debates around consuming behaviour. Therefore the sociality of consumption is the main theme of this animation.
